September 11, 2022 – Ps 80, Pr 9, Song 5

Song is Songs 5

When I read this I was confused especially when she was beaten by the watchman of the city. So I looked into the Enduring Word commentary that I will link below. That’s where I found out that this is a dream sequence. The maiden does not want to inconvenience herself to get out of bed to let her beloved in. Perhaps it is because she is holding onto some anger or resentment as to why he was not there in the first place.  But he does not get angry. While reading the commentary I was thinking ahead to when she talks about dripping with myrrh. I thought that was a metaphor for her desire for him. So I thought it could be that she was playing hard to get with him. Dragging out the enjoyment of his pursuit. They explain in the commentary that it would have been a message of love left by the man. And showed how this is an example of marriage and the struggles we experience. When she goes out looking for him in her dream state her painful and unhelpful response of the watchmen and the other maidens is because of her guilt for not forgiving. It shows us how resentment and unforgiveness can eat us up. What she needs to do when angry at him is what she finally does with the other maidens. She remembers all the good there is in him. All the things she admires in him. What a perfect lesson for me as of late. I love how God always know how and when to remind me of this.
